On the Soapbox: Quest
One of the most interesting things about human beings is that we're constantly on a quest for knowledge and answers whether we are conscious about the search or not. Some quests I don't quite understand -- like the Italian man who has taken a local priest to court to get the priest to prove that Jesus was real and not a made-up character.
Other quests I didn't even know existed! Like how researchers are now celebrating the discovery of the largest prime number (9.1 million digits long .... they were LOOKING for it?).
Then there are those "everyday" quests which just make me go awwwww and marvel at the simple joys of growing up ..... For example, this past Tuesday was the first day of school for many little ones, including Kei, my cutie-pie niece (daughter of my sweetie's brother), who is now in Primary 1.
From what her mom said, Kei was a trouper -- she was happy and excited while "the bigger boys" cried their eyes out. What I found amazing was that she didn't have to go through the whole pocket money ritual; now, schools use smart cards or cash cards or whatchamacallits! So at recess time, instead of eating what mommy packed for her, Kei put her smart card to good use and bought herself some chicken rice!
And so Kei's journey towards independence and more knowledge continues. How exciting :-)

I like your story about Kei. School nowadays is not like last time. My pocket money in Primary 1 was 20 cents. Now the kids use plastic money.
Still remember queueing up for my favourite mee goreng in primary school during recess. "Uncle" was such a warm person, he actually remembers his "regular" customers and sometimes gave me a little bit extra for my patronage. Talk about learning social/business norms at a tender age.
Anonymous, I so agree with you! My daily pocket money back in the dinosaur days was probably 20 or 30 cents too!
3a gurl, awwww, that "uncle" was so sweet. One does learn so much about the world in school.
