Real Vintage

Just thought I'd share another passion of mine -- vintage! Every few years or so, the vintage look becomes fashionable, but for me, vintage is a timeless classic. I have lots of vintage clothes, jewellery and bags.... and books!!! I have two sewing books from the 40's :-) and a handful of sewing paper patterns from the 50's and 60's.

Real vintage clothes and jewellery must be at least 20 years and older to be considered "vintage".

Everything else is vintage-look or vintage-inspired.

Pictured above is a part of my vintage collection. The necklace was one of the fun pieces which belonged to my grand-aunt who was quite the fashion plate in her time. (Looks quite contemporary, doesn't it? But it's at least 30+ years old). Aunty Kina (short for Bianca) was always proper and ladylike and often ensured that her jewellery and outfits matched.

If she were still alive, she'd be in her mid-90's. I still have a receipt for one of her items which dates back to the 1940's!! I also have an art deco brooch which dates back to the 1930's, but it has decided to hide from me for now, the naughty thing :)

Most of the pieces are "play" ones and I hope one day to be fortunate enough to own a more precious real vintage item of jewellery.

MAYBE one day I'll restring my grand-aunt's necklaces and create some pieces made from authentic vintage parts. Maybe.

Most of my other vintage acquisitions are from eBay and vintage shops here and overseas when I am lucky enough to travel for work (and have the time to do other normal-people things like shop).

Update on comments: Liz, got your comment -- thanks! And I so agree with what you said about people trying to pass off things which are old-looking or just a few years old as "vintage". But Blogger is being strange and it refuses to upload any comments. Hope they fix it soon!!

Good article. Knew you had 'inherited' some of your grand-aunt's things but wasn't really sure what the pieces were. Always admired her jewelry when she taught me Geography in Secondary school! Beautiful pieces and like you mention she was very proper in her dressing and her choice of accessories. She had some really beautiful 'precious'/semi-precious pieces if I remember correctly.

Hi bellebeadz! Yeah, right up to the end, Aunty K was immaculately turned out, and always with a necklace which matched her outfit.

She gave Jo-Anne and me some of her stuff some years ago and I think mum may still have other odds and ends stashed away somewhere.
